The German Connection
Late in the 19th century Wilhelm Wippermann opened the doors of his bicycle parts manufacturing business in Germany. Over 100 years on and five family generations later the Connex branded chains from Wipperman mirror the same resilience and strength that has made the company itself an enduring success. Utilising materials such as stainless steel, Connex consistently test as the world's most durable chains.
Similar to an upgrade of parts for a high performance car or racing motorbike a Connex chain provides superior functionality over original equipment. Connex are often identified by their straight edged outer links. This promotes quicker gear shifting by directing the sprocket tooth into the link micro seconds quicker than other designs. While adding a few grams the performance advantage is obvious. The outer links inside edges are also chamfered, which accelerates chain engagement on the tooth quickly resuming power transfer to the wheel. Also the flat side faces of a Connex chain reduce drivetrain noise as contact with other sprockets due to road vibration is minimised. Pin concentricity, or the exact roundness of the pin is a key detail in chain construction as the tiny contact area of the pins are what transfers power from one link to the next. Connex pins are polished far beyond normal manufacturing standards ensuring high energy transmission from the rider and reducing chain wear in the greatest stressed part. Connex 9 and 10 speed chains are supplied with a tool free joining link so the chain can be removed from the bike by hand if required for cleaning and maintenance. This reusable link has a breaking strain of 1000kg, far exceeding any force able to be generated from a rider. Advanced Connex manufacturing has resulted in production of chains utilising stainless steel links and chains with full brass plating. Both are rust resistant and the stainless 10sX model in tests conducted by RWTH-Aachen University in Germany outlasted all the other major manufacturers best chains by over 15% or 1000kms. Connex chains are built to a standard that will enhance the shifting precision of any top level bike and guarantee reliability in the toughest riding conditions.
