The starting point in the ITM handlebar range and featuring the same bend shape as all ITM bars. The Alutech 6061 is great value and can be matched up with the same model stem and seatpost for a complete ITM Alutech set.
The Alutech 6061 is named for the material used in its construction, a 6061 grade aluminium butted tube is first swaged to form the diameter from 31.8mm at the handlebar to the standard road 23.8mm diameter for the remainder of the bar. This now tapered tube is bent to shape in a computerised tube bender to the radius specifications set out by the ITM designers. The bar is bead blasted before being black anodised and printed with white logos.
ITM handlebars have all been designed to have the same bend dimensions throughout the range. The shape can be described as compact but without the very tight radius on the drop portion like some other brands. This makes the ITM bars very comfortable for riders with both small and large hands.
The three important measurements of the Alutech bar is that is has a centre-to-centre reach of 70mm, which is a horizontal dimension from the centre of the stem portion to the centre of the drops bend. This equates to an outside edge to outside edge measurement of 98mm. The handlebar drop is 125mm again measured from centre of the stem portion to the centre of the end of the handlebar. This is shallower than a standard bar but not as excessive as some compact bars and this is one reason along with the drops radius of 45mm that makes the ITM Alutech suitable for a range of riders.
Compact bars often allow for improvements to be made to the whole front end of the bike. The dimensions of the bars can be used to reduce reach to the brake hoods, or reduce the total drop to the bottom position on the bars. Conversely if a rider is happy with their current position, the shorter and shallower bar can allow the stem to be fitted lower on the fork, reducing the headset spacer height and stiffening the front end of the bike. The shorter reach of the ITM bars can be used to fit a longer stem giving more knee clearance when riding off the seat. Just the compact nature of the bar itself means the bar will flex less than a standard bar of the same width, especially important when sprinting or cornering.
