Designed as fast training and club road racing wheelset, the Miche Syntium features a medium profile rim, bladed spokes and lightweight straight pull spokes. Durability is not compromised, with all parts made to withstand thousands of kilometres of use. The Syntium is a quick accelerating wheel with a profile especially suitable for riding in windy conditions.
The rims have a sleeved join and are fitted with stainless steel reinforcing-eyelets to enhance durability. The 20mm rim external width is matched with a 25mm medium height to create what can be described as a high profile box section rim. The Syntium rear rim is extruded in an asymmetric profile. Because the rear cassette causes the hub flanges to be off centre on the rear wheel, the asymmetric rim helps to even the spoke angles. This provides better spoke triangulation and more balanced spoke tension for higher lateral wheel stiffness and strength. A wear indicator line on the braking surface indicates over time when the rim has reached the end of its safe surface life.
Spokes used on the Syntium wheels are sourced from Sapim in Belgium. These blank straight pull spokes are bladed to a 1.3mm x 2.4mm flat profile. This forging into the flat shape not only improves aerodynamics but also better aligns the grain structure of the metal for a stronger spoke. The blading also facilitates easier truing of the wheel by providing a flat surface to hold with a spoke tool to prevent the spoke twisting. The spokes are finished with a black coating to complete the look of the wheelset. Spoke nipples are long 14mm chrome plated brass which are more durable and less susceptible to fatigue than fragile aluminium spoke nipples.
Miche manufacture the hubs entirely in their factory in Italy and they are forged then machined from super strong and expensive 7075 grade aluminium. The hubs run on high precision sealed cartridge bearings, to guarantee long-lasting smoothness and durability in all weather conditions. Bearing preload adjustment is simple, meaning as the bearings do wear over time, this wear can be compensated for by a simple adjustment just requiring a small allen key. No disassembly of the hubs or special tools, are required, and the adjustment can even be done with the wheels still on the bike. To provide high strength and increased wheel stiffness the Syntium hubs feature a direct pull hub flange design which has been highly machined to reduce weight in unnecessary areas. The angles of the spoke holes in the hubs are machined specifically for the angle required by the rims that are used. This ensures perfect spoke alignment from spoke head to rim that minimises any fatigue related failure of the spoke head over time.
On the rear hub the spoke pattern has a special design to handle high torque loads as power is applied by the rider, and to the rear wheel, under acceleration. By decreasing the size of the left flange and increasing the size of the right flange, Miche are able to even out the bracing angle of both the drive and non-drive side spokes while at the same time reducing the weight of the hubs.
The final step of wheel assembly is completed in house via a two-stage process. First the wheel is hand laced and pre tightened. Next, all the wheels components are mechanically stabilised which involves a machine controlled pre-stressing and vibration action. Each wheel is then vertically and laterally centred using an automated process, to meet the strict parameters set out by Miche technicians, before the final quality control involving any detailed adjustments is performed by hand.
The Syntium AXY wheelset is available in two colour options. Not just different colour graphics, one option offered includes black rims, hubs and spokes while the alternative is a brush polished and clear anodised wheelset to highlight the natural aluminium tone. This set is a great match to the Primato 11 speed groupset with the polished crankset option.
